Medicare Part A Eligibility
(Hospital and Related Services)
Regular Eligibility (premium free Part A):
 |
If you are in at least one
of the following categories:
-
You are 65 or older and entitled to a
social security retirement benefit as an insured wage earner (at least
40 quarters of coverage (QCs) or fewer depending on date of
birth).
-
You are 65 or older and you or your spouse had Medicare-covered
government employment.
-
You are 65 or older and you are certified by the Railroad Retirement
board as a qualified Railroad Retirement beneficiary.
-
You are under 65 and you have received
Railroad Retirement disability benefits for the prescribed time and you
meet the Social Security Act disability requirements.
-
You are under 65 and have received Social
Security disability benefits for at least 24 months.
-
You are under 65 and have End-Stage Renal
Disease (ESRD) or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, commonly known as
Lou Gehrig's Disease).

Part A for those that do not have enough work
credits:

Must meet all of the following requirements:

Age 65
-
A U.S. citizen or lawfully admitted
alien (5-year continuous resident in U.S.)

Must elect Medicare Part B coverage
-
Must enroll for premium Part A during the
prescribed enrollment period

Ineligible for Part A under any other
provision
Part A premium = $423.00/month (for
individuals with fewer than 30 QCs) in year 2008
Part A reduced premium = $233.00/month (for
individuals with 30-39 QCs) in year 2008 |
